This term, Ms. Murphy’s 4th class studied Ancient Rome. We enjoyed learning about how the Roman empire was built, their armies and the battles that took place in the Colosseum. Engineers week 2020: Bridge Building Challenge

To celebrate Engineers Week 2020, pupils from Ms. Donnelly’s class took part in a Bridge Building Challenge. The class learned about the work of a civil engineer and why planning and preparation is such an important aspect of constructing bridges and roads. They explored the variety of bridge designs that can be seen in famous bridges around the world.

They were then given the challenge to construct a bridge strong enough to support as many Busy at Maths books as possible!

Working in groups of three, the boys were given a booklet where they had to brainstorm their ideas, choose which design of bridge they would construct, draw up a plan of their bridge and finally, bring it to life! They collected recycled cardboard and used it to construct their models along with tape, straws, string and lollipop sticks.

The pupils put in a huge effort, thoroughly enjoyed the task and all bridges stood up to the challenge!

To celebrate Shrove Tuesday the boys in Miss Treacy’s fourth class got busy making pancakes. Each group brought in their own equipment and we discussed ‘As Gaeilge’ what ingredients were needed and what method must be followed to make a pancake batter. They used their knowledge of procedural writing to structure their writing up of the process which they also did through Irish. The Scientific element came into play as they started to heat their batter on the hot plate and watched it change form. Finally, they got to the exciting part and got to add toppings to their pancakes and enjoy the fruits of their labour!

For the month of January the pupils in Miss Treacy’s fourth class were working on their projects about the Vikings. The boys used their I-pad time to research the topic, as well as investing extra time at home for further work. The students got to choose a presentation method which suited them to present this topic. Some chose to create amazing longship models. Others chose to present fact filled posters and booklets. One boy interestingly chose to focus in on the Myths and legends associated with the Vikings. Displaying real passion he presented his project in Viking chain mail, helmet and weaponry. The projects were fascinating to view and read. Well done boys!

Today Ms. Treacy’s class visited Trim library to listen to story teller Niall De Búrca. The boys were laughing from start to finish. Niall told them stories from his life with energy, actions and sound effects. The boys loved joining in with the interactive story telling with actions and voices. Niall captivated the pupils with his stories and even incorporated some gaeilge in his presentation. It was a very enjoyable experience for all of the pupils!
